PrepNewmexico.com has learned that John Garcia of St. Pius X High School has made a verbal commitment to Eastern New Mexico University. Garcia took a visit to Eastern last weekend and came away very impressed with the new coaching staff , facilities and the plans for the program.
"They are actually recruiting me as a safety. They are the only school to say they wanted me at safety and the more I thought of it, the more I like the idea. They did mention I could still play corner, but that they liked my size and wanted me to start at safety and see how things worked out."
Garcia is ranked as our #2 prospect in the state and is being recruited as a return specialist as well.
Standing 5'10 and weighing in at 185lbs Garcia squats close to 500lbs, benches 270lbs and power-cleans 260lbs. Match those things with his 4.55 speed and Garcia brings some great attributes to the Eastern defensive backfield.
John had numerous other offers at the FCS and D2 level. In addition he was being courted by numerous D1 programs in the region for quite some time. When asked what made him choose ENMU over his other options, Garcia said: "There were a few different factors. My education is the most important factor of this decision. After my parents and I met with academic advisors at Eastern we were really blown away and I knew I could be successful there. I will be getting my degree in electrical engineering. Coach Lynn and coach Lee made me feel like I was at home. Coach Lynn is going to recruit a lot of New Mexico kids and he believes in us. That meant a lot to me and the chance to play in my home state where my family can watch was very important. "
"I'm just going to go in and work as hard as I can to help my team. I want to learn as much as possible and do whatever the coaches ask of me. My number one goal is earn the respect of my teammates and coaches by working hard and practicing hard."
John Garcia is just one of the many in state kids who have committed to ENMU:
Mike Hathcock 6'2, 265 OL (Aztec)
Michael Cowden 6'2, 365 NG (Aztec)
Dustin Breeze 6'5, 305 OL/DL (Belen)
Ryan Greene 6'2, 200 QB/S (Goddard)
PrepNewMexico has learned that ENMU has offered many more in state kids including our 3rd ranked prospect David Anaya ( Goddard) and many others. Look for the Greyhounds to be the star of the show on national signing day here in the state of New Mexico.
NOTE: We will be doing more interviews about commitments in the coming weeks. So stay tuned!
