Signal Callers

Staff
Posted Jan 21, 2008

2007 was the year of the QB. Most will agree that the level of play at the QB position last season, was as good as any point in recent memory. Most of those studs graduate, but that doesn't mean all the talent has left. Here is a quick look at 6 signal callers that are returning in 2008 and ready to prove their worth.

QB Breakdown

When looking back at the 2007 HS football season one thing is clear, the QB talent on the field was as good as there has been in recent memory. The QB position is the most important position on the football field. Most teams that are title contender type have guys that can really play the position and do what their respective offense needs them to do in order to be successful. Like Landry Jones in the Artesia wide open attack or Matt Sandoval doing it with his legs running the option to perfection at Mayfield, no matter what the offense, you need a good signal caller to run it. We will all miss watching players from around the state like Jones, Sandoval, Jordan Mendoza, Alex Carson, Paul Shay, Jose Sanchez and Alberto Caballero play the position. The above mentioned have used up their eligibility and have to know move on. But they haven’t left the cupboard empty. Here are six QB’s that are primed and ready to prove how good they are in 2008.

Dante Caro – Las Cruces 6’0 180

Caro had a great season and will be this year’s version of Sandoval, because he is a dual threat type. He threw for 1301 yards and 10 TD’s last year and if that wasn’t enough he ran for 1423 yards and 15 TD’s. Look for him and the Bulldogs to be one of the favorites next season.

Josh Garcia – Valley 5’11 200

Garcia is another dual threat type that will cause defensive coordinators nightmares as the figure out how to stop him. Garcia can beat you with his arm, as he threw for 1826 yards and 12 touchdowns as a junior; if that wasn’t enough he also ran for 627 yards and added another 4 touchdowns on the ground.

Tyson Billy – Shiprock 6’1 175

Billy had a very solid year topping the 1000 yard mark in the air, throwing for 1038 yards and 10 touchdowns. He also ran for 148 yards and 3 touchdowns.

Tyler Davis – Tularosa 6’3 190

Davis had a great season that went unnoticed by lots of people. The 6’3 signal caller threw for 1050 yards and 10 scores and he also rushed for 850 yards and another 12 touchdowns.

Nathan Clark – Carlsbad 6’2 190

Carlsbad didn’t have that great of a record, but if you ask any opposing coach they were a really good football team. One of the reasons why was the emergence of Clark. The 6’2 field general threw for 1171 yards and 6 touchdowns and he also ran it in 3 times.

Tim Regalado – Dexter 6’0 180

From the small school ranks, watch out for Regalado and look for him to have a huge 2008. Last year he rushed for 839 yards and he found the end zone 11 times with his legs. He also threw it around a little bit, throwing for 833 yards and 13 touchdowns.

All of these players have got serious talent, but the question remains, can they be as good as this year’s class? I can tell you they have mighty big shoes to fill, like we said earlier, most will agree that the QB talent in the state last year was as good as it has been in recent memory. These kids are different players than those other guys, but they are talented in their own right. In order to be a good team you have to have a good QB, no doubt these head coaches know they have a good one coming back next season.
