When you are 6’6 and 350 pounds it’s hard to go unnoticed. That seems to be the case with big Rio Mares offensive lineman from Cibola (N.M.). Mares was recently named the top offensive lineman in the state heading into the 2008 season and most feel he might be the top overall prospect this year. Right now two schools have extended offers those being the local schools in New Mexico and New Mexico State, but things have begun to pick up for the big man and with recruiting as well, “I still only have the two offers but last week Wisconsin, Texas Tech, Nebraska and Utah all called the school and asked for tape.” Anyone who understands college football recruiting they know that when coaches ask for tape it usually means there is some interest there. We asked Another big aspect of the recruiting process is being able to get out to schools and compete in person at junior days and also at combines across the country. The more exposure a player can have the better off they will be. Mares understands this and will be out and about this summer, “Texas Tech has invited me to their junior days in April and Wisconsin wants me to their camp this summer, I’m also planning on going to the Nike combine at BYU as well.” Mares has recently commented that he has lost some weight and is down in the 330 range but ultimately he would like to play his senior year lighter than that. If he has good showings at these camps over the summer expect the recruiting to pick up for this
