Video Evaluation: Andrez Brewster

Santa Teresa WR Andrez Brewster is one of the most explosive athletes in New Mexico next season. We break down his game and talk about his strengths and weaknesses. He is hearing from New Mexico and New Mexico State and should be one of the better players in 2008.

One of the surprise teams of the 2007 season was Santa Teresa.  They went 7-4 and return enough players that big things are expected from them this season.  One of the other reasons why so much is expected from them is because of the emergence of playmaker Andrez Brewster.  Brewster had a big junior season with more than 1000 yards of total offense and 11 total touchdowns.  Brewster is a speedster that can take it to the house at any time from any point on the field.  A few months ago we posted his highlight video and now we break down his game.  Here are our thoughts on Brewster as a player and as a college prospect.

Positives
Explosiveness, Brewster in an early interview said he ran in the 4.4 range and on film that appears to be true; he gains separation quickly and can turn on the jest in the open field.  When watching his film, I also notice that he has really good hands.  He will set up his body to catch the ball with his hands and out away from his body.  Brewster also has good body control and will go and get the ball at its highest point on fade type routes.  He is also pretty good in the open field, where you can really see his speed.

Negatives
Size, Brewster is listed at 5’11 170, which if that’s true is still light and short as a college prospect.  If he were more in the 190 range he might be a better prospect.  As fast as Brewster is, he runs upright almost in track form, this is okay in high school might cause big concerns in college.  Lastly, I noticed he comes out of his routes a little high.  What he needs to do is sink his hips and explode out of breaks; this is a skill that can be taught however.

Overall Prospect
I really like Brewster.  At this point he is one of the top two or three WR prospects in the state depending on who you talk to.  Brewster will be busy this summer going to camps at New Mexico and New Mexico State in order to impress coaches and hopefully come away with an offer.  I think at this point Brewster is a wait and see approach to his recruitment.  Reason being is his size is probably the biggest concern.  I could see Brewster being a mid-major type prospect when it’s all said and done.  At the very least he’s a 1AA prospect, but since he’s in New Mexico he might need to go through the JC routes in order to gain more exposure.

Bottom Line
Look for Brewster to be a dynamic playmaker for Santa Teresa next season.  He should be a real force as a return man and a WR as well.  He will also be dynamic in the secondary and will probably be up for all state honors when it’s all said and done.
