Junior class in New Mexico could feature several top-tier D1 players

2011 Mid-Season Prospect Rankings

1. Matt Hegarty 6-5, 270 OT (Aztec HS) - Has the ideal body frame and athleticism to be an elite offensive lineman in college. Currently is being recruited by UNM and half the PAC 10. Bottom line is that Matt Hegarty is an elite college prospect and is likely one of the countries top 5 OT prospects for 2011. Rumor is that he will make an early commitment, but if he decides to wait will receive attention from all the national powers. Is also a very solid DE prospect at the next level.

2. Ronnie Daniels 6-1, 210 ATH (La Cueva HS) - Ronnie has the height, weight and speed to play many positions in college: RB/WR/S/OLB. However, he is really great with the ball in his hands. At the moment he has offers from both UNM & NMSU but once his junior film gets around, he will have 20 + offers. Should be a top 150 prospect in the nation for 2011.

3. Willie Pounds 6-4, 310 DT (Eldorado HS) - Still isn’t 100% from his injury a year ago, but is a difference maker. Has the size, athleticism and explosiveness to be a very good DT at the college level. Should collect numerous offers once the camp circuit starts.

4. Matthew Rammondo 6-4, 260 DT/OT (Mayfield HS) - Offers great size and athleticism to any team. Has the frame to be 290 in a few years and is very athletic. If Matt can improve technique wise, he could be a PAC 10 offer guy. He projects well at DT, DE or OT. Is a definite high level D-I talent.

5. Dustin Walton 6-4, 215 QB (Raton HS) - Typical pro- style Quarterback. Walton is already built better than most D-I QB’s and has great accuracy and touch in his throws. Has good but not elite arm strength and is very fundamentally sound. High level schools will probably prefer a QB to be slightly more athletic and quick footed but Walton looks like a definite mid major prospect, however, don’t be surprised if some PAC 10 schools sniff around and express interest.

6. Isaac Leon 5-11, 210 MLB/FB (St. Pius HS) - Lacks ideal size for a MLB and ideal speed for an OLB, but this young man is a definite D-I player. He has great instincts and is always around the football. Perhaps the most explosive hitter in the state and has the hips/athleticism to turn and run in coverage. Leon also offers great blocking and soft hands as a fullback prospect. Overall, if he was 6’2 he would be my number one prospect in the state for 2011, however I still project him as a definite D-I player and think he will be an all conference type player.

7. Matt Jaramillo 6-5, 220 QB (West Mesa HS) – Jaramillo might be the best prospect at QB in the state, however he doesn’t have much help around him and is forced to try and do too much. If he can focus on fundamentals, and hit the camp circuit he could be a multiple offer player. Not only is he 6’5 but he also offers a very strong arm and enough athleticism to play TE should QB not work out.

8. Tim Foley 5-8, 160 CB (Rio Rancho HS) - Foley is a little shorter than you would like your CB to be but does have good athleticism and great ball skills. Probably only a 4.6 40 guy, but has the hips desired to turn and run with WR’s and break on balls. Also a very good hitter in space and can be an asset in the return game. Is a borderline D-I guy at this point but is a definite D-II player.

9. Emery Coleman 6-3, 175 WR (Tularosa HS) - Coleman is a playmaking machine and has great size and jumping ability. Also possesses solid straight line speed and has very good hands. At this point, the only thing keeping him from being a D-I lock is his foot speed; has very average quickness and needs to polish his footwork in order to run routes effectively.

10. Daniel Jaramillo 5-11, 170 RB (Belen HS) - Still would like to watch more film of this young man but there’s no question he is the 2nd best RB in the 2011 class. Jaramillo runs the ball with great power and is very elusive in space. His speed seems very solid but not game breaking. Right now, I would say a very good D-II player.
